The longer I work in early childhood, the more I realise this work is less about having all the answers…
and more about being willing to reflect.

My practice has changed.
Not because what I knew before was wrong, but because every child, every experience, and every relationship has taught me something new.

Growth in this profession comes from asking better questions:
✔️What does this child need from me? ✔️What is this behaviour communicating? ✔️How can I create more safety and connection?

We don’t have to continue doing something because we have always done it that way… often the biggest shifts come from the things we do differently 🌱⏳

In early childhood we are often taught to focus on stopping behaviour 🛑 but what happens if we slow down long enough to ask:
• What is this child needing right now?
• What are they trying to communicate?
• What’s happening beneath the behaviour?

Children don’t ask for connection is neat and polished ways.
Sometimes it looks loud.
Sometimes emotional.
Sometimes messy.
When we acknowledge this, the shift changes everything 🌱

Things no one is talking about in early childhood education 💬

Not everything that impacts quality practice is visible.

Some of the most important work happens in how educators respond, regulate, adapt, and connect | moment by moment.

And that reality deserves more recognition than it gets. 🤍

National Reconciliation Week (27th May - 3rd June).

This is an opportunity to reflect on the role we play in shaping the environments children grow within.

In early childhood, this work matters deeply.

The way children experience belonging, diversity, storytelling, respect, and connection in their early years shapes how they see both themselves and others 🌿

At the Amy Approach, we believe that intentional environments go beyond routines and behaviour support. They also include creating spaces where culture is acknowledged, respected and valued.

True inclusion and reconciliation are not seasonal practices, they’re weaved into our everyday culture and communities. ✨

Yes, it is not a podcast about early years learning at all! But that didn’t matter, it sat deeply with me and I’ve been applying these concepts to my daily practice ever since 🌸

In an early learning environment:
✨Sometimes “helping” looks like co regulating alongside children.
✨Sometimes “hearing” looks like slowing down to actually listen to what the behaviour is communicating.
✨Sometimes “hugging” looks like comfort, presence, reassurance or simply being near by.

Hi, I’m Amy. I’ve spent over 14 years working in early childhood education and discovered that calm, intentional, and connected learning spaces don’t happen by chance - they’re created. 🍃

That’s why I founded The Amy Approach: to support educators with hands-on workshops, professional development, and one-on-one mentoring, so both educators and children can thrive.
